In Africa 70% of people are engaged in agriculture, such a large percentage that over 60% of the total GNP for most African countries is generated by farmers.
However, Africa remains a continent with the largest food-deficit in the world, with one-third of its people continuing to suffer from malnutrition.
In addition to malnutrition, food insecurity leads to environmental degradation, poverty and a wide range of health problems. However, to the extent that food security will improve, most facets of life in rural Africa will improve as well.
Below are the grassroots initiatives in food security and agriculture that Bread and Water for Africa® supports:
Baraka Farm, Kenya
Shinga Development Trust, Mozambique and Zimbabwe
Faith Healing Development Organization, Sierra Leone
Namunkanga Sustainable Farming Program, Uganda
Gedado Development Organization, UgandaÂ
YETEEM Children and Destitute Mothers Fund, Ethiopia |
