Program Summary:
Bread & Water for Africa’s® assistance to the Puntland Region of Somalia helped to stave off dire results from a triple human threat faced by families in the region: drought, a first ever recorded snow storm in the desert and last December’s Tsunami.

For more than a year, a continuing drought has seriously affected the Puntland Region’s livestock and this loss of livestock had caused the destitution of many families. Paired with a snowfall, the first on record in the history of this part of the world, the cold weather killed a majority of livestock and rendered many people ill. Somalia having no functional central government has no weather prediction or climate-monitoring services, thus the snowfall, which blanketed the region, was a surprise with no time for families to bring their nomadic livestock to safety.

The day after Christmas, the same Tsunami that devastated much of Asia hammered the coast of Somalia affecting 16,000 people, killing hundreds, displacing thousands and stealing the livelihoods of many more. Bread and Water for Africa®, working in partnership with KAALO, the largest non-governmental organization in the Puntland region, provided Tsunami aid to 380 families affected by the damage in the Qunded, Falah-Falah, Bundun-buto and Barwein communities. Together, Bread and Water for Africa® and KAALO helped provide for the delivery of foodstuffs, water, sanitation, and shelter. To encourage development, KAALO has also been involved in replacing fishermen’s boats to make it possible for them to continue earning their livelihood.
