Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone endured a brutal civil war between 1991 and 2002 resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population), many of whom are now refugees in neighboring countries.  Rampant poverty and instability have had terrible effects on the country.  The statistics are astounding.  Only 30% of women ages 15-24 are literate; the figure is 47% for men.  Inadequate health care and poor nutrition mean that 307 children die for every 1000 born before they reach five years of age.

In partnership with the Ndegbormei Development Organization (NDO), Bread and Water for Africa UK serves to provide food, medical care, schooling, counseling, and vocational training to children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
